Hey, in case you didn’t know this, Georgia is a battleground state this year…
Voters Showed Up in Georgia
Yesterday was the first day of early voting in the battleground state of Georgia, and it was a big one. Over 328,000 votes were cast in the Peach State, far eclipsing the previous record of 136,000, set in 2020. Polls are showing former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris locked in a statistical dead heat, at 48.3% to 47%, respectively — well within the margin of error.
In related news, Georgian Judge Robert McBurney (appointed, incidentally, by a Republican governor) ruled late yesterday that a recently-passed law requiring a hand-count of ballots on election night will not take effect this year. And finally, former President Jimmy Carter reportedly got his wish to vote for Harris, which he had told his grandson he was more interested in than his recent 100th birthday.
Trump: IVF Father Figure?
Over the past 24 hours, former President Trump appeared at two high-profile campaign stops — one was an interview yesterday with Bloomberg News editor-in-chief John Micklethwait, and the other was a town hall meeting this morning with Georgian women moderated by Fox News host Harris Faulkner. In both appearances, and more and more frequently in his campaign rallies, Trump, when presented with a question or topic, rambles away from the initial topic in broken sentences, sometimes returning, sometimes not. For instance, during his appearance this morning, he was asked about in-vitro fertilization. After declaring himself the “father of IVF”, he went on to state:
“I said explain IVF, very quickly. And within about two minutes, I understood it. I said, ‘No, no, we’re totally in favor of IVF.’ I came out with a statement within an hour, a really powerful statement with some experts, really powerful. And we went totally in favor, the Republican Party, the whole party. Alabama’s legislature a day later overturned, meaning approved it, overturned. Overturned, the judge essentially approved it. And we really are the party for IVF. We want fertilization, and it’s all the way.”
(Please note that, despite Trump’s assertions, many abortion opponents in the Republican Party are very much opposed to IVF.)
In other remarks, he declared himself smarter than anyone when it came to tariffs and the federal reserve, and declared that January 6th was a day of “love and peace”.
Harris: Hello from the Other Side
I mentioned yesterday that the Vice President is planning an appearance on Fox News later today. Additionally, she will be making a campaign stop in Pennsylvania, in red-leaning Bucks County, with over 100 Republicans joining her. Included in that group are former GOP Representatives Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, and David Trott of Michigan. She appears to be making a strong push to reach voters who wouldn’t typically vote for a Democrat — particularly Nikki Haley Republicans. This expands on her previous Republican endorsements from former Rep. Liz Cheney, former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Senator Jeff Flake, and (just to mention so this item fits in with the title theme) former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan.
