Muddying the Waters

August 31, 2024

Clear As Mud: Once again, shortly after I posted yesterday, more news came out. This time in regards to former President Donald Trump’s position on the Florida initiative to eliminate the 6-week ban on abortion. While he had stated earlier in the week to NBC News that he thought that 6 weeks was too short, he gave a solid “No” when asked by Fox News whether he would be voting to repeal the ban. But he further muddied the waters by repeating his thought that six weeks was too short, then followed that up by repeating his oft-told lie that “some of the states like Minnesota and other states have it where you can actually execute the baby after birth”. Poll Positions: As some of my readers are aware, I largely started this effort to help explain to my kids what was happening in the country. And given that my oldest kid just asked me how the polls are doing, I figured I should provide a snapshot of that. I’m a big fan of the website Electoral-Vote.com, which has been run for years by a couple of college professors who average up the most reliable polls, so that if the election were held right now, we’d have a good idea of who would win the Electoral College.

So first up, as I’m writing this, Vice President Harris is up, 292 electoral votes to Trump’s 230 (for those who’ve forgotten Civics class, 270 votes are needed to win), with 16 votes (i.e., North Carolina’s) hanging exactly in the balance. That being said, a lot of states are polling within the margin of error, so it’s still anyone’s ball game. Those of you who remember what it was like in October of 2016 know how easy it is to be bamboozled by poll numbers. LINK
